In a shady area toward the middle of 4,210-acre Griffith Park, the remains of animal enclosures from a zoo that closed in 1965 stand in all their rocky glory. Built by the WPA in the 1930s, the zoo’s faux naturalistic design is “delightfully part Bat Cave, part Tiki bar” according to one visitor. You can climb the monkey bars still in place, or just sit at one of the picnic tables facing the zoo and imagine what it was like to experience the place with roaring big cats and bears.

It was designed in 1911 by landscape architect Ralph D. Cornell, the then college-age California newcomer who would go on to design the grounds of UCLA, the La Brea Tar Pits and the University of Hawaii. And because this contemporary art-packed park lets you nosh next to Yayoi Kasuma tulips or Magdalena Abakonowicz’s sitting figure, we chose it as the best picnic spot for art lovers. In more than a decade of Los Angeles living, I've determined that the best meals in this town are eaten under the sun or the stars. And since every night isn't an occasion that merits the patio at Spago, that leaves a lot of space to develop a strong picnic game. And while out-of-towners might assume a picnic simply involves a delish portable meal on a blanket on a green lawn, we Angelenos know better.

Describe your venue:

The Picnic House is the perfect venue for your outdoor ceremony on the sprawling Long Meadow, alongside the comfortable amenities of our stunning indoor space. We have curated a spectacular list of vendors to recommend for your event. Recently completed is our beautiful, private Couples’ Suite where you can relax before & during your wedding. This 12-acre park located in front of City Hall downtown was updated ten years ago to have wide stretches of green lawn perfect for picnicking, an interactive fountain to splash around in and a Starbucks, among other lures. Grab a distinctive powder-coated pink chair and sit for a quick bite or to enjoy one of the outdoor concerts or art exhibits staged here.

But the big day came and the café, bakery and bar’s doors finally opened on the north side of the park’s Picnic House. HistoryThis stunning venue was built in 1927 and still features its original tile roof and French doors that lead to the terrace. The space has been renovated to include gorgeous lightings and windows for couples and their guests to take in the panoramic scenic views.

Join Prospect Park Alliance on Mondays, April 15 & May 20, 2024 for a special series of open houses at the beautiful Picnic House in Prospect Park. Beyond viewing the Picnic House in all its finery, you will meet some of our exclusive caterers and event specialists who will help you create your perfect celebration. AutumnIn fall, the park bursts into a riot of colors–a gorgeous backdrop for your special day. The crisp weather means you can still take advantage of the outdoor space and head back indoors to party the night away. With scenic views of the 90-acre Long Meadow, floor-to-ceiling windows, hardwood floors and a working wood fireplace, it provides a bucolic setting in the heart of Brooklyn. In the Valley, we love lounging on a blanket near the 27-acre lake to watch the people paddling by on rented swan boats.

Sidle up to one of the lawn bowling pitches or by the three reflecting pools at this sweet West Side park that is in Santa Monica but has more of a countryside feel than a beachy vibe. It’s not too crowded, and has a clubhouse to rent in case you want to make your picnic a more formal affair. Comprising more than five acres on UCLA's north campus, this outdoor sculpture garden is one of our nation's finest. Be sure to check the web site for the map of sculptures before you go, to enjoy your picnic in view of work by your favorite artists (Maja by Gerhard Marcks is shown here).

There are sea views, world-class art installations and Instagram-ready swan paddle boats. We’ve compiled the best from the east side to the ocean, with input from locals who love to eat en plein air. Now the only decision to make is which wine to decant into your HydroFlask. Brooklyn foodies have been waiting months for a Winner, new café in Prospect Park, to open its doors. Winner’s owner, Michelin-star chef Daniel Eddy, is well known for his sandwiches and pastries, which attract lines dozens deep in Park Slope.

Ten marble benches (for the “Hollywood Ten” who were shut out of the industry) are surrounded by text of the First Amendment, as well as quotes from people affected by blacklisting, are etched into stone benches and walkways. A central tree lets you enjoy a shady meal while you contemplate “how quickly civil liberties can fall away, right in front of our eyes,” says one visitor. It’s a particular pleasure to realize that you’ve brought just the right picnic to just the right park. Eddy wants to keep surprising park-goers over and over and so, his latest addition to the menu is a collaboration with Greenpoint’s Oxomoco chef, Alan Delgado — Burritos Juarez with chicken, lamb or carnitas on a homemade tortilla. As tomato season starts in New York in late July, Delgado is planning a special with nopal salad. SpringThere is no more romantic time or place to get married than Prospect Park as it bursts into bloom in the springtime.

The Picnic House is surrounded by daffodils, forsythia and other early-blooming spring flowers. Decorate with budding branches and enjoy the outdoor access afforded by the venue. I am a passionate event professional with over a decade of hospitality and live event experience. As a former manager at a high-profile music venue, restaurant, and event space in Brooklyn, New York, I oversaw operations of events of all shapes and sizes during my 8-year tenure there. There’s no better place to celebrate than the Prospect Park Picnic House, and we’ve got tips for the party, discounts and more to help your plan the special day.

The Picnic House can be tailored for every taste and budget, and is a blank canvas to create the ideal wedding or event, no matter the season. There’s a concession stand for chi-chi snacks, or “there are also vendors as you walk along the park so you can get a delicious elote and other Mexican treats,” says one visitor. An expanse of grassy lawn where you can not only put down a picnic blanket but also (unofficially) let your dog run around off-leash? That’s the happy arrangement at Lake Hollywood Park, where you can chill and nosh under the protection of the Hollywood sign watching over you. You’ll recognize this as the park with the big “Beverly Hills” sign looming over the duck and carp pond.
